Support for Angelo

On March 29, 2026, Angelo was burning brush when a sudden gust of wind blew the flames toward him as he added gasoline to the fire. The gas can exploded, engulfing him in flames and causing third-degree burns over 65% of his body. Despite the severe trauma, Angelo managed to reach his home and call 911. First responders arrived quickly, and he was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Angelo was placed in a medically induced coma while an incredible team of doctors and nurses provided critical care. Over the next seven weeks, he underwent 14 surgeries and faced life-threatening complications, including pneumonia, sepsis, rapid weight loss, and organ failure. On multiple occasions, he came close to losing his life.

When Angelo was brought out of the coma, his care team gently explained the severity of his injuries and set expectations for a recovery process that would likely span years, noting that he might never fully regain his previous physical baseline.

Angelo was eventually transferred to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, where he completed four hours of daily physical and occupational therapy alongside more than an hour of specialized wound care each day. Through immense determination, he progressed from bed rest to a wheelchair, eventually graduating to a walker and relearning how to navigate stairs independently. By August, he reached a milestone that once seemed distant: returning home for the first time.

Throughout this journey, Angelo’s family provided unwavering support. His wife, a high school teacher, took a leave of absence to be by his side daily until his discharge, while his sister moved into their home to assist with ongoing daily care needs. Angelo is self-employed and the primary provider for his household. The nearly five-month absence from work created financial strains that compounded an already challenging situation.

Angelo is deeply grateful to be alive and is eager to share his journey in hopes of offering strength to other burn survivors. A true fighter, he is currently working from home as best as he can. He continues outpatient physical therapy three times a week and faces additional surgeries in the near future.

This ordeal has forced Angelo to learn how to ask for and accept help. It’s a hurdle many patients and families face during crises. As we shared with Angelo, there is profound power in watching a community rally around one of its own.

In this spirit, we invite you to join Hope Strengthens Foundation in supporting Angelo and his family with essential care expenses. Your tax-deductible donation will directly cover compression garments, transportation, physical therapy sessions, and home care items he needs for continued recovery.
